I think it's obvious by now

I don't give a shit about the dreaded 'mary-sue' trope anymore.

Incoming.... rant? I dunno just read

I remember way back when, when it was such a huge thing with me in fandoms, especially when I was part of the Danny Phantom fandom, I'd even tried to 'help' others make their characters less 'mary-sue' ish if I could, but now I realize that the characteristics for 'mary-sue' were always so vague and varied so much, sometimes they differed in definition based on individual interpretation, and a lot of the anti-mary-sue culture I became part of were at times very toxic. Not to mention the double-standard when it came to this trope, wherein a fair few male OCs get ignored or passed over (gary-stu was not a word I saw tossed around a lot back then if at all). Not to mention some 'criticism' I see thrown around by some of those in the 'anti-sue' culture doesn't even constitute as proper criticism but more like bullying.

Yes I'm using the dreaded 'b' word because that's pretty much what I see from a lot of people in regards to 'sues'. I've seen everything from homophobic to transphobic slurs thrown at sues who's gender was unclear to the viewer, to outright racism towards 'sues' that were darker recolors of canon characters (yes, they used the N-word). I could say some people just don't know how to critique properly in an objective sense, but when it came to 'critique' like above, it was obvious they were just there to be cruel and show their true colors about more than just the sue itself.

I began to realize that most 'sues' were in fact harmless, and I started to quit being so hard on them-and even myself and reigning in my own creativity or self-indulgence in characters. Which is why there's been a recent 'explosion' of alicorns in my gallery.

Now it's not to say there's anything wrong with people's personal preference in characterization, and some characters and their qualities are just flat-out awful, cringe-worthy or in terrible taste, but looking at OCs that get harshly criticized based soley on being shipped with the main character or happen to be a magical horse with wings and a horn just starts to bother me, and made me realize that getting up in arms about them is more stress than it's worth especially if these characters aren't made professionally and don't affect me or a show/game/comic/whathaveyou's canon directly.

Like with me, a lot of these characters are made for fun. They make their creator happy, and really do no harm than existing in their creator's own personal corner of the fandomverse. Learn to let people have fun.

Now if you want to ask me things about this or discuss this further with me, feel free to do so.

What a lot of people don't realize is that Sues and Stus aren't sues and stus because of their design, it's because they're usually poorly developed. That's what they are: Poorly developed characters. Often, they're made as a wish-granting partially self-insertion (or entirely self-insertion) of the creator, which is why they're usually very protective of the character.

I've learned to shut my mouth about them because of the overprotectiveness. Usually, eventually, they'll learn on their own how much of a bad character it is they've made LOL. Once upon a time, I was one of those people, after all.
